Sonic and the Secret Rings is a new Sonic game developed exclusively for the Wii, not to be confused with the recent Sonic the Hedgehog games released for Xbox 360 and PS3. This adventure begins with Sonic turning the pages of the classic book, 1001 Arabian Nights, when the genie from the story appears and seeks Sonic’s help. An evil Djinn is draining the book and pages are disappearing. According to prophecy (the story not included in most editions of the 1001 Arabian Nights), is that a blue hedgehog must defeat the evil Djinn. The genie gives Sonic a ring that allows him to travel into the book, recover the missing pages, and set the story back in order.

The game is designed to utilize the Wiimote. Unlike previous 3D Sonic games and most platformer games, Sonic moves on a rails system where you do not have to press anything for him to move forward, he just goes forward. You hold the Wiimote horizontally between your two hands like you do with a regular controller. Tilting the controller right or left will direct Sonic to turn in that direction. Turning the controller towards yourself will make Sonic walk backwards. The “2” button makes Sonic jump. Holding it for a period of time will make Sonic slow down and eventually stop. Letting go will cause Sonic to make a high jump. Sonic will be able to slow down time and gain 100 abilities through an RPG-like level up system.

The game features 70 different missions and 40 multiplayer minigames that make use of the Wiimote.
