This fourth installment to the Splinter Cell series, Sam Fisher takes the role of an under cover operative to infiltrate a terrorist group. The double agent element comes into play as Sam must make decisions that affect his trust with the JBA terrorists and the NSA. If he sides with the JBA too much, the NSA may think he has become a terrorist. If he sides with the NSA too much, his cover may be blown. The player's choices will result in three possible endings.

The Xbox 360 version uses a multi-threaded version of the Unreal Engine, previously seen in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. The Xbox 360 verison also includes slightly different content from the versions on the older consoles.

The Spy vs. Mercenaries multiplayer has been revamped since Chaos Theory. The max size of teams has increased from two to three players. Spy's have been nerfed in their direct combat abilities bu have are much faster and responsive when interacting with the environment.
