Before Activision/Red Octane hands off the series to Neversoft for Guitar Hero 3, and before Harmonix moves on to Rock Band, Activision and Harmonix team up to release a final swan song for the Guitar Hero 2 phenomenon. This game will be essentially an 80's themed console expansion pack, promising to bring the guitar hero be a rock star experience to the 80's decade of music.

They have specifically said that it will cover main 80's genres such as 'punk, hair metal, and new wave', and it will include all new retro nevues, rockers, unlockable guitars and skins etc. The initial batch of tracks announced include "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls and "I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister (original tracks), as well as "Mental Health" by Quiet Riot, "The Heat of the Moment" by Asia (cover tracks). They have anounced that they will include 30 liscenced tracks this time around, and some previews hint at one unlockable bonus song.
