Yoshi's Island DS (DS) is the sequel to one of the most popular platformers of all time, Yoshi's Island (SNES), which sold over 4 million copies. The game features 2D Mario style gameplay. The player straps different babies to Yoshi's back which give Yoshi different abilities that result in beating the levels in different ways. There are five babies, Baby Mario, Peach, Donkey Kong, Wario, and Bowser.
Yoshi also has basic abilities such as a ground slam when landing from a jump, "flying" short distances by repeatedly jumping, or eating opponents with his long tongue and spitting them back out as an egg that can be launched at enemies or objects. With these abilities, the player will run and jump through many levels to foil the evil wizard Kamek’s plot to abduct the world's babies.
