Final Fantasy III (DS) is a remake of the 1990 Final Fantasy that only appeared in Japan, not the Final Fantasy III (SNES), which was really Final Fantasy VI, that appeared in the United States. This remake features new 3D graphics and doll-like characters found in Square's Final Fantasy Tactics series, rather than the realistic characters found in the PS2 Final Fantasy series.
The game uses the DS's top screen to display a map of the overworld. The gameplay brings back that of the early Final Fantasy series, walking around with random monster encounters to level up. The combat is turn-based once again. The player's characters can change jobs (the traditional Final Fantasy classes of dragoons, black mages, white mages, etc.) and there are over 20 jobs in the game. Like early Final Fantasy games, characters can only select a limited number of spells for each level of spells.
