The Godfather: The Don's Edition is the same game in terms of basic content as The Godfather: The Game, which was released in 2006 for PS2, Xbox, PC and then later Xbox 360 and PSP. The game is based on the 1972 film, The Godfather. Rather than recreating events of the movies and books, the game lets the player create their very own 1940s New York City mobster in free roaming, non-linear gameplay. The player rises from a freelancing outsider to the Don of New York.
However, The Don's Edition includes the Corleone Expansion Pack that includes more content. It includes all the additional content of the Xbox 360 version and additionally includes five new hit mission, six new venues, two new vehicles, and more. The Don's Edition improves upon the "Black Hand" control system developed for analog stick controllers but also takes advantage of the SIXAXIS controller. The Black Hand control system utilizes analog sticks to punch, headbutt, kick, strangle, etc. However, similar to the Wii version, you can move the controller itself to swing your opponent left and right or shove him back. Also new to the PS3 version are photographers who will take pictures of your crimes. You will have to chase them down and get the photos so there is no evidence of your activities. The Don's Edition now also makes visiting the brothels more useful as they will provide you information on high-level government officials that frequent them.
The Don's Edition changes the character improvement system of the earlier versions. Instead of gaining points to improve fighting and shooting from gaining respect, you now progress your character in a certain path, such as enforcer or operator. Also new is the ability to call a hit squad to aid you, rather than having to take out all enemies yourself. Additionally, you can bribe police officers to fight for you, so you can play the game strictly as the puppeteer behind the scenes.
