The Godfather: The Blackhand Edition is the same game in terms of basic content as The Godfather: The Game, which was released in 2006 for PS2, Xbox, PC and then later Xbox 360 and PSP. The game is based on the 1972 film, The Godfather. Rather than recreating events of the movies and books, the game lets the player create their very own 1940s New York City mobster in free roaming, non-linear gameplay.
Unique to this version is the use of the Wii's motion sensing controls. Both the Wiimote and the Nunchuk are used. While on foot, you move by using the analog stick on the Nunchuk. Pressing Z will lock on to a target but you can then move the Wiimote to adjust the crosshair for more specific targets, such as the knees. You can grab an enemy by pressing the Z button and then punch him by using the Wiimote in a punching motion, push him by using both the Wiimote and the Nunchuk in a forward motion, or headbutt him by pulling the Wiimote and Nunchuk towards your head. After beating down you enemy, there are 50 executions you can perform to finish him off. The screen will display a diagram on how to perform certain executions, such as neck snaps and execution headshots. Opening doors and reloading weapons are all done through motion controls.
The Blackhand Edition changes the character improvement system of the earlier versions. Instead of gaining points to improve fighting and shooting from gaining respect, you now progress your character in a certain path, such as enforcer or operator. Also new is the ability to call a hit squad to aid you, rather than having to take out all enemies yourself. Additionally, you can bribe police officers to fight for you, so you can play the game strictly as the puppeteer behind the scenes. The graphics are on par with the PS2 version.
